Gigi DeNisco... Her Story.

A lifetime of music was set into motion at age six when Gigi DeNisco was given piano lessons at her grandmother’s house. She got her first guitar at age nine and wow! She was good at it! At the same time, her mother had put together a singing group with her two sisters called The DeNisco Trio, complete with a cute dance routine on the beaches of Miami. However, that was NOT what young Gigi wanted to do. Besides being shy, she wanted to play her guitar and write songs. By age 15, she was writing them daily, pouring her teenage heart into each composition. She had things to say.

“I wanted to be a musician ever since I could remember. I loved the Beatles and I loved playing my guitar. The only issue was that I was painfully shy. When I was around 18 years old, I got the nerve to do some open mic nights, which was unbelievably hard for me, but I did it – and kept doing it.”  Around this time, Gigi started working as a Buyer at a heavily trafficked record store in Miami where she was able to learn more about how the record industry worked.

Gigi started playing gigs all over Miami and Broward County. It wasn’t long until she got a booking at Tobacco Road, widely considered the oldest, and coolest, bar in all of Miami. The legendary hot spot played host to many musicians including John Lee Hooker, Sun Ra, Jimmy Buffet, Joan Jett, The Romantics, John Hammond and more. “I learned so much from all the people who headlined there. When my set would finish, I’d run upstairs and wait for the headliners. I was in New York City with a friend, and I noticed blues guitarist Kenny Neal was performing at the Blue Note that night. I decided to go up to the door and ask to speak to him because we’d hung out at Tobacco Road. Well, not only did they let me and my friend in, but he called me onstage to sing with him.”

Gigi has been singing with many headliners since; she’s had opening stints for Michael Bolton, Willie Nelson, Keith Urban and even Stevie Nicks at the 20,000-seat outdoor amphitheater Coral Sky (now known as the iTHINK Financial Amphitheater)“Before these bigger gigs I was flown to Jamaica to perform at a wedding to 500 people, which I thought was a lot. Each show I did, the easier it got, and the more I believed in myself and my talent.”

Gigi also wasn’t looking to be a rock star, but somewhere along the line that happened too, with two charting singles: “Pony Ride" went to #5 on the FMBQ AC chart and “Before We Start” went to #11. “It blew everyone away because I didn’t have a label! There I was, sandwiched in between Nickelback and John Mayer on the charts!” She went on to represent the Florida Music Association at SXSW and was voted Best Female Rock Vocalist in the Miami New Times.

At the very end of 2019, Gigi broke her left pinkie finger very badly. It took her a year to be able to play guitar again, and even then, it was quite painful. “I spent the time shoring up the songs I had written but hadn’t put out yet. I wanted to make sure my finger healed.” And she went back into the Studio. “It was wonderful! Jimi Fiano is my long-time guitarist and friend, he has been on every single record I’ve ever done. He produced my album Too Close for Comfort and now my newest release, SEASONSI have Euvoski Cunningham on drums and Steve Argie on bass. I had most of the songs written – guitar and lyrics – but me and the guys worked on everything else together. I never go into the Studio unless I have songs. I have to work at songwriting, but I love it. I write and re-write. I am not prolific, but I am determined. And like anything you do over and over, I’ve gotten much better at it over time.”

“Sidetracked” is the first track from SEASONS released on streaming“I wasn’t sure how the song would fit in the album, but it did! I watched a sermon about being sidetracked and sat down to write the song on a day that I was angry at my boyfriend. It’s not really a personal song, though I think it’s one everyone can relate to.”

“Blue Skies and the Rain” is the only track on the album that was Recorded and produced by Fernando Perdomo (Carmine Appice, Marshall Crenshaw Band, Dave Kerzner) and was mixed by Steve Gordon. “ “Blue Skies and the Rain” is about our environment, and while I wrote it some time ago, I am seeing everything I wrote slowly start to come true. We are treating our planet badly.” Another favorite of Gigi’s from SEASONS is “Everyday,” which is about love and treating the people in your life with kindness. “The song has this reggae beat and is so positive. I am doing 3-part harmonies in the chorus – one time Maurice Gibb (Bee Gees) told me he loved how I harmonized with myself,  I finally heard what he was referring to on “Everyday.”

While faith is very important to Gigi, she doesn’t consider herself solely a Christian artist. She is hopeful her songs plant some seeds,  “I am a secular artist who writes and a Christian who has drawn closer to God. My songs reflect that journey. I started going to bible studies and felt like God was working on me. He saved my life when I was in my teens, and then he saved my soul!” If people who listen to SEASONS have their guard up, I hope my songs lower it and makes them think a little bit differently.”

Gigi DeNisco is in a really great place. “I’ve missed playing live, so I am excited to do that. Gigs are like therapy to me, and I love the interaction from fans. To be honest, there isn’t a whole lot of things I haven’t done that I wanted to in my music career. I am just happy to have made this album and I hope it is received well!”

Look for Gigi’s list of live performances, coming very soon!
